The NCSU Apiary (complete with 1950s wallpaper in the bathroom).
I couldn’t have been more excited about my first bee lab. Scheduled for 10am to 4pm, it was sure to be a long day but it went by fast. The NCSU research apiary is off Lake Wheeler Rd in the middle of other NCSU agriculture research facilities and other people’s farmland – you barely feel like you’re in Raleigh anymore which just seems like the appropriate setting for beekeeping.
We spent most of the day building 5-frame nucs (mini-hives) and putting together 5 frames with wax foundation. Basically a lot of nailing & painting. The day was also about walking around looking at the 30-40 hives in the NCSU bee yard and getting acquainted with the little girls coming in & out. More photos over on flickr.
